“I’m Charles Baker Harris,” he said. “I can read.”
“So what?” I said.
“I just thought you’d like to know I can read. You got anything needs readin‘ I can do it…”

To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee

Daughter mine has finally finished reading this for school. It was a bit of a struggle for her (I may have ruined it by mentioning right when she started that it wasn't one of my favourite books either!). She loved the movie though (and how did I not remember that a very young Robert Duvall played Boo Radley?)

We tried an audiobook, but the narrator read soooooooo sloooooooow (and the poor kid has a pretty heavy courseload, she just couldn't invest that kind of time on it, since like me, she has difficulty listening to an audiobook while doing something else).

Her final assignment was to pull a favourite quote from the book, and lead a brief class discussion about the quote and how it fits into the themes of the book. I'm not sure about how the second part will go, but she had absolutely no hesitation picking a favourite - the one above :)
